Formerly known as "Provo Park"
Considered a home away from home for a hand
full of Berkeley High students and the home of a section of the world wide
and world renowned Peace Wall is Berkeley's Martin Luther King Jr. Park. It's
a fairly small park but it certainly has it's share of cultural significance.
It's name seems to be a disputable topic since it has changed a few times over
the years. The park's original name was Civic Center and then was changed to
MLK Jr. in 1983, but all the Berkeley High kids refer to it as "The Park." Also, for many years it has been fondly
called Provo Park after the progressive political group which was started in
Amsterdam. I think the Berkeley High students have the right idea just calling
it "The Park." - www.ci.berkeley.ca.us
