..... | { June 6, 1974 Graduation My senior photo for the yearbook. June ?? Last bash for us high school seniors - at Mark Beacham's house. Mark's sister, Theresa, and I collected $0.50 at the door in a coffee can for beer keg runs. The word had gotten out and it was starting to get out of control so collecting thinned some out. I think his parents were gone for the weekend and 1 window got busted - we had a lot of cleanup to do on Sunday. Looked pretty much as nothing had happened. A stray baseball was probably the answer for the broken window. I remember there was outdoor concert at ECHS but don't recall the group - and no it wasn't CCR - that was years earlier and I think they were called the Pollywogs or something like that back then. Diploma. I actually didn't receive this until 1976 when I was stationed at Ft. Lewis and needed it to attend Pacific Lutheran Univ. They just sent it! I was held back because I had failed Businees Math in my final semester at ECHS. The teacher was a tough nut who actually gave me a life lesson and wouldnt pass me - which I didn't comprehend at the time. Senior year was kind of party time to me - cut too many classes - remember I was living away from home - so as I look back I'm surprised I even stayed in school. I did come out with a 2.56 GPA or about a B-/C+. I made up for it in college where I was getting straight A's. Diploma cover. Transcripts |

The word from the parents was I had to move back out when I turned 18 so Russ hooked me up with his friend Bob and John to let me crash at their place in Pinole. July 4, 1974 Went out to Pleasanton Fairgrounds for fireworks / party. We were at a stoplight and I went out of Bob Stailings car to get into Russ's car. We used to do this thing where he would start taking off and I would jump into the passenger seat. This time it didn't work : ( Russ was having an argument with Russ and was looking straight forward, I probably didn't get in as swiftly as I normally did - so he started to take off at the light change. Next thing I know the back tire went over my legs and I was in the middle of the street with my pants all ripped up. I tried to get up but couldn't. The guys made an arm cradle and carried me over to a bus stop. Fortunately we were right next door to a hospital so there I went. I had about a 2 inch wide round opening in my inside left ankle. That is where the tire went over my leg and spun across the ground - that was the the most visible wound - I remember the worst part was getting Novocain shots right in that wound so they could stitch it up. The doctor said it was because of the wide tires on Russ's Camaro that my injuries weren't worse. I couldn't put any weight on either leg so the guys had to carry me around and eventually to my new residence in Pinole. Since I was a very mobile person it was a humbling experience - it probably gave me time to think about my future and was the basis of my eventual push into the art field. Rest of the year was spent recovering • I would have to drag myself across the floor to go to the bathroom. • This was a party house - a real non-stop animal house • Because they knew I would be home the girls, Vicki and her friend name? would cut classes from nearby De Anza High and come by. • Russ and crew "sequestered" a wheel chair from SFO - Bob cut his leg up because him and Bob had a race on the people mover and he slipped and fell. • Having the wheel chair was incredible - I finally had mobility - I got good with it popping wheels, etc. • I finally got good enough to use crutches to get around • I had to humbly had to get food stamps for a couple of months to survive and not completely mooch off of my roomies. • I remember the first time I was able to walk around the block without any aide - it was very slow, baby steps but I made it. It was one of those "Rocky" moments - I was so excited! • I eventually got a job at Jack in the Box on San Pablo Dam Road - was nice to work again and make money. I worked a graveyard shift - from about 6pm to 3am - then would watch late night movies - that's when I started my night owl fascination. • People were pigs back then - they would eat in their cars end then just dump their trash right out the window onto the pavement - even with a trash can a couple of feet away. Well one of my thankless jobs was to clean that mess up - I think I became a neater person after that • Eventually I got a job with a friend of Bob named Loren working on a moving line. I was so excited to start - 6am in the morning a big Global Lines 18-wheeler honked their horn outside and I came running down. • It was a great job - got a big $5 an hour - was big money to me back then. Everyday was a new adventure - never knew where you would be going to. Moving a piano down a spiral staircase in SF or a couch that only would go out 1 way in Santa Rosa. I guess I must have recovered well 'cause had to haul lots of furniture - ah to be young again and recoup so quickly! Hey you - you wimping out and carrying "C" boxes there? "C" boxes where special boxes to hold light weight lampshades. • Eventually nesting on my roomies couch ran out it's welcome - so Bob pushed and I left - we still remained friends. I left 2 trippy paintings by Brian Runnings that Bob really liked. } |
