Your mother, your father, the god of gods, the law, always correct, the ultimate being, the giver of physical and mental punishment and anguish...yes your Drill Sergeant.... this was mine. SFC Daniel R. Varner, Drill Sergeant Varner. He was tough but actually aproachable after maybe week 4. Larger version

Drill Sergeant Murrell ...what can you say...you never wanted to do wrong in front of him. He would yell for you to "get your goat smelling ass over here!" then get in your face and hammer the rim of his campaign hat on your nose while berating you in front of everyone. He had this big hoarse voice, probally from many previous trainees that had disappointed him, and always wore those shades. He was the lean, mean, fighting machine you were supposed to become.

Myself and Julio used to imitate him to the other troopers for laughs. One evening he quietly came into the barracks doorway as we were doing our show, having everyone in stiches...suddenly they got quiet...we turned around and freaked. He was silent for a bit...death was near...then he just started laughing and said.."I didn't know I was so popular...I'll have to work you harder next time. Carry on!" "Yes Drill Sergeant!" Then he left. We survived. SFC Charles S. Murrell. Larger version

A "butterbar". All I remember is that he joined one of our field marches and taught a dirty cadence march song. LT Anthony J Cerri. Larger version

That's me in the middle, just coming out of the gas chamber. Our platoon put our gas masks on outside...wasn't it like less than 15 seconds to put on and clear them? ...then they had us go in this room and line up inside against the wall. We then had to pull off our gas masks and inhale. You couldn't leave the room until you did...a good punch in the stomache by a DI made sure you did breathe in. They wanted you to taste the effect of gas and how horrible it was. It was as bad as they warned it would be...you couldn't do anything but gasp, choke, some chucked up, snot was coming out your nose...it stung like hell, it was hard to see. We all took better care of our gas masks after that!
Later on one our field marches they threw gas canisters in our ranks and we had to put them on for real.

The obstacle course. That's me at the head of the line on the left. I was actually pretty good...was best in my platoon for a of couple weeks and got to go to the front of the chow line as the "Super Jock." Larger version
