..... | Home: 239 Concord Avenue Fairfield, CA • Janruary 01, 1988 Friday - present Work: Austin Knight Advertising 05/12/1986 - 07/01/1992 Worked as Art Director 021808rev011114 Steve Garson News of the Year 1988 All I remember is that our boss, Nigel Hartley, had visited our LA branch and brought back a Mac Plus (it had come out in 1986) that wasn't being used by George the art director in LA. It sat on a table in our art department, dejected and ignored for about 4 to 6 months. Then one day Nigel said George wanted it back - he was starting to explore the digital realm. I stayed late at work that evening, cracked open the Aldus Freehand manual and did a simple tutorial. Basically drawing some shapes and layering them out next to each other. We had purchased a 300 dpi printer, so I was able to print it out and then show it to my art crew the next morning. They couldn't believe that I created that from that little machine. We currently had 3 fancy, expensive Compugraphic typesetting machines and employees in a seperate department run by Tania Ortega. That's where all the work went. So gradually us artists started playing around on the Mac - nothing impressive - the printouts held us back. The typesetters could output much higher quality than our 300 dpi printer. The typesetting department would get really swamped on Thursday for Friday morning newspaper deadlines - so us art directors couldn't get headlines set for our ad designs - ad to pubs deadlines came first. So our John Disbrow would set a headline on the Mac at twice the size and then photostat it down 50% essentially creating clean 600 dpi type. Well that caught on quickly. Soon we had to have a sign-up sheet for the little Mac 'cause now everyone wanted to use it. I think we then upgraded to a Mac ci (or a Mac Plus SE?) - tons more speed (back then) - and in a year or 2 the typesetting department was gone and the production department was cut in half. 4 years later (Aug. 1992) I was able to open my own graphic design business with just a Mac Quadra 950 and 600 dpi QMS printer. 01/24/2014 Apple celebrated the 30th anniversary of that world changing little machine. |
