..... | Rudy Gomez Photostats (RGP) 02/16/1979 - 10/26/1979 901 Battery St., San Francisco • Photo courtesy of Shelly Gefter (in photo) 1979 Rudy Gomez Photostats (RGP) Staff Larger version Left to right: • Ralph Romero - large horiz camera (from Pittsburg - lives in Sacramento) • Shelly Gefter - cameras, rubdowns, deliveries, p/u's (lives in Miami) • Rudy Gomez Owner (lives ?) • Steve Rubin - rubdowns (lives ?) • Steve Garson - cameras, deliveries, p/u's (lives in Fairfield, CA) • Robert Takihara(sp?) - large horiz camera (lives ?) Group photo taken on the flatbed of a photostat camera using continuous tone paper. Supplied by Shelly Gefter 02/05/2006 I was fresh out of the service (Army - Helicopter Armaments and Airframe Repair and eventually Battalion Illustrator). I worked in a photo darkroom and turned into a mushroom - they would slip jobs under the door for me to work on. Agfa Geavert (sp?) Repromaster 8600? vertical camera. I started out at $3.80/hr and worked about 25 to 30 hours a week while going to school at the Academy of Art full time - took evening classes. I learned a ton at RGP, met a lot of great people - it was my scary exciting intro to the big city. When a delivery was needed I would jump on the sturdy RGP bike with a basket in the front and ride the stats over to the client. That way I met a lot of local designers - I soon realized I was in the middle of design / agency heaven! I tended to be a perfectionist - too much so for the owner Rudy. I could see the writing on the wall - I wasn't going to last much longer. So I started keeping my ear to the ground for any openings. One of the places I delivered work to was Rick Golan, the art director at Bernard Hodes Advertising. I would talk with him trying not to be too much of a pest. One day he asked me if I knew anyone needing work as a production artist - entry level. My hand shot up - ME! I started the next Monday. Wow - a close one. It was a bit of sweet revenge to now be the client of my old employer. And I knew the inards of the RGP - which camera had a scratch on the coy board, etc. so they had to do it right! 1979 Christmas at Rudy Gomez Photostats. I had left to BHA. Shelly and Lynn created this "rub-down" card. It tended to "rub-off" also ?#@!! Front: • Pete ? • Phil Mason - photolab, replaced Steve R. • Lynn Kasuba - rubdowns Link1 • Shelly Gefter - cameras, rubdowns, deliveries, p/u's (lives in Miami) Back: • Robert Takihara (sp?) - large horiz camera (lives ?) • Ralph Romero - large horiz camera (from Pittsburg - lives in Sacramento) • Rudy Gomez Owner (lives ?) • Cliff (vietnam vet) orig:022006rev:022106 |

Taken on backing board of horizontal camera with a posterized effect. Starting at upper right, clockwise: • Ralph Romero - large horiz camera (from Pittsburg - lives in Sacramento) • Robert Takihara (sp?) - large horiz camera (lives ?) • Rudy Gomez Owner (lives ?) • Male ? I friend of Rudy who worked at Viacom (upstairs) • Female ? • Steve Rubin (with Shelly's hand on his head) - rubdowns (lives ?) • Vincent Tipaldo - Office Manager - nice guy who I took Skydiving with me out in Antioch Vincent Tipaldo 101210 • Steve Garson - cameras, deliveries, p/u's (lives in Fairfield, CA) • Shelly Gefter (with hand down Steve Rubin's head) - cameras, rubdowns, deliveries, p/u's (lives in Miami) Geez - this was a pretty lame design I did for RGP recruitment. Shelly Gefter Lingoisms: Whatz•a•pal•sa? Par•rah•shoot•taa "I went sky diving at that place also, a few weeks after Steve did. I landed real funny and got the wind knocked out of me plus sore muscles for a week. Never did it again but have exotic memories of that one jump." |
..... | Photo of Rudi Gomez Photostats bike messenger at front entrance of 901 battery SF 1979 • Photo courtesy of Shelly Gefter (in photo) This bicycle for client deliveries was the escape from the close quarters of our office. It also gave a new found chance to meet local designers at their studios. When I first started at RGP the main rider (besides Shelly?) was a beefy blonde haired girl (name anyone?). |
