Four grand marshals to lead Veteran Days parade

By Ian Thompson
DAILY REPUBLIC FAIRFIELD

Two World War II veterans, an Iraq War veteran and the commander of David Grant Medical Center will lead the Veterans Day parade in downtown Fairfield Nov. 11.

Retired Navy WAVE Phyllis Miller, retired Navy Lt. Commander Bill Nesbitt, Army Command Sgt. Major Andres Roman of the 49th Military Police Brigade and David Grant commander Col. Lee Payne were named as grand marshals, parade organizer Todd Grames said Monday.

The parade starts at 12:30 p.m., following an 11 a.m. remembrance ceremony at the Fairfield Center for the Creative Arts.

More than 90 floats, marching bands, horse units, car clubs, military marching units, fire trucks and honor guards will participate in the parade.

Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day, which marked the day World War I ended and honored those who served in that war.

Miller was born in Iowa and moved to Los Angeles with her family when she was 3. During World War II, she served as a communications officer in San Diego and San Pedro, where she met her future husband, Charles Miller, who was serving as a Naval officer.

Nesbitt, 93, served in the Navy during both World War II and the Korean War. He left the service and moved to Fairfield in 1953 to establish a successful medical practice.

On June 6, 1944, Nesbitt waded ashore at Omaha Beach as part of the Navy's 7th Beach Battalion to provide emergency medical treatment for the seemingly endless numbers of severely wounded GIs.

Payne, who commands the 60th Medical Group that runs David Grant Medical Center on Travis Air Force Base, joined the Air Force in 1979 after graduating from the University of Kentucky. He has served at several military medical centers in the United States, Italy and Turkey.

Roman joined the Army in 1978. Twenty-six years later, he joined the 49th Military Police Brigade, which is stationed at the Parker Road National Guard Armory. Roman was deployed to Iraq with a large contingent of the 49th MP Brigade to train Iraqi police forces and support coalition operations.
