to main newsletter page FAIRFIELD DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER December 2002 2002 Year-End Merchant Survey On November 21st, the FDA Board of Directors requested that staff prepare a year-end merchant survey to gauge merchant satisfaction and goals in a number of specific areas. The survey is written and ready for mailing, but with the hectic pace of the holiday retail season it was decided to delay mailing of the survey until after the first of the year. PLEASE WATCH YOUR MAIL FOR THIS IMPORTANT SURVEY. COMPLETE IT AND RETURN IT TO THE OFFICE PROMPTLY. THE RESULTS WILL BE TABULATED AND THE BOARD WILL USE THE INFORMATION IN PLANNING FUTURE EVENTS. Make Customers Feel Special Reprinted courtesy of Barbara Wold Customers like to feel important. Here are some things you can do to enhance that feeling: 1. Call them by name 2. Listen to their needs, wants, and criticisms 3. Learn their preferences and respond to them Example: Asking, do you still prefer____? this lets them know that you remember. 4. Get to know them as people. Know something about their families, professions, interests, etc. 5. Compliment & reassure them 6. Keep in touch 7.Take customers pictures Example: An auto agency takes photos of customers with their new cars and posts them on a bulletin board. What a better way of bringing them into the "family of happy customers"! In short: Treat them as guests you care about. City of Fairfield Leases Salvation Army Space The City of Fairfield has entered into a long-term lease with the owner of the property at 1001 Texas Street, currently occupied by the Salvation Army Thrift Store. Plans call for major improvements to the building and the recruitment of a restaurant for the site. This represents a terrific opportunity for downtown merchants to have specific input in the kind of eatery you'd like to see downtown. If you've traveled somewhere and experienced a restaurant you'd like to have here, please call Curt Johnston (City of Fairfield- 428-7445), Rich Atkins (City of Fairfield- 428-7572) or Emily Low (422-0103). The City has a variety of programs in place to help a business owner with tenant improvements for the property. The Solano Small Business Development Center has programs to assist with financial statements, business plans and other business related training, with experts on staff. Please help the revitalization efforts by "scouting out" new businesses for our district. In addition to restaurants, the business development strategy targeted scrapbook shops, a frozen yogurt or ice cream shop, a health foods store, shoe repair, fabric stores, awards and trophy stores and a coffee house as fitting well with the current mix of businesses. As you travel around the area, look for these kinds of stores and pass the information along to City staff so the lead can be pursued. Let's work together to bring these businesses to downtown. Coming Events: Solano Business Expo The 2003, 8th annual Solano Business Expo- formerly the Let's Do Business Mega Mixer- will be held Monday, March 24th from 4 to 7pm at the Nelson Community Center in Suisun City. The new state-of-the-art facility will provide space for more vendors than ever along with the very popular Bistro. The event gives small business owners in Solano County an opportunity to network with their peers in a casual and festive setting. Business owners will be able to meet purchasing representatives from government agencies who will provide specific information on government contracts and projects coming up for bid. This countywide event expo gives business people the perfect opportunity to generate new contacts. Booths are going quickly. For information, call the Fairfield-Suisun Chamber of Commerce at 707-425-4625 SOON! Lenders Fair Returns The Suisun-Fairfield Lenders Fair returns in a new setting- the Nelson Community Center in Suisun City. The annual event is scheduled for February 13th from 2:30 to 8:00pm. It will feature a "Meet the Lenders" workshop, with a chance for attendees to discuss business loans and residential home loans with financial institutions and local government agencies. This year's fair includes a trade show featuring lenders, title companies and information on City loans. The entrance fee is $5. County Breaks Ground on New Administrative Center On Tuesday, December 10th, Solano County and City of Fairfield officials hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the new multi-million dollar administrative center. This cooperative effort between the county and the city is of extreme importance to every downtown business. Clark Construction of Sacramento is the lead contractor for the project, and has already requested a listing of downtown businesses so that as many sub-contractors as possible can be hired from the immediate area. Dorothy Hollon of Clark Construction says that the goal is to involve local businesses in every aspect of construction from building the facility itself to feeding the 250 or so trades people that will be on site at any given time. The project has a two-year completion deadline, and, due to an unprecedented agreement, labor unions have agreed to no work stoppages and full cooperation during the construction period. An apprenticeship program for Armijo High School students studying construction trades is included. On December 3rd, FDA Board President George Fernando attended a planning and information meeting with county and city officials. George obtained some important contacts to help support downtown merchants through the project.
