to main newsletter page FAIRFIELD DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER Febuary 2003 Merchant Survey Results By Board Chair George Fernando The results of our merchant survey are included in this newsletter. Please take a moment to review the opinions expressed by the 42 merchants who responded to the survey. Based on the results of the survey, the Board has approved the 2003 Calendar of Events as follows: May 1st through October 2nd- Farmers Market July 3rd- Concerts in the Courtyard begin (9 concerts) July 4th- Independence Day Parade, BBQ & Concert August 9th- Twelfth Annual Tomato Festival August 29th- Concerts in the Courtyard conclude October 2nd- Final Farmers Market October 11th- Third Annual Candy Festival October 31st- Halloween Trick or Treat December 5th- Holiday Night of Lights The Farmers Market will remain in the 1000 block of Texas Street for the 2003 and 2004 seasons, moving to the new County Plaza as soon as it is open- planned project completion would allow the market to open there in May 2005 In addition, the FDA will assist the City of Fairfield Community Services Division and veterans groups in the Veterans Day observances on November 11th. The third annual observances will include a memorial service at Fairfield Center for Creative Arts and a parade along our traditional downtown route. From April 15th through April 18th, the 61st reunion of the Jimmy Doolittle Raiders will take place in a variety of places between Travis Air Force Base, downtown, Fairfield's Gateway, Vacaville and the Nut Tree. The City of Fairfield and the FDA have been asked by Travis to provide a parade to honor these American Heroes. The parade will use our regular route and will mean an additional closure of Texas Street during a weekday. The Fairfield Police Department, California Highway Patrol, Solano County Sheriff and Travis Air Force Base Security representatives are working on the details of a "rolling" closure that will ensure that Texas Street remains open as long as possible before the parade and re-opens at the very earliest possible moment after the last entry has passed. I hope you will support the Doolittle Reunion by offering specials or coupons that can be distributed to the people coming into town for this event. According to the Travis organizers, last year's celebration in South Carolina brought 60,000 people to the area over the five days of the reunion. Downtown restaurant guides have been provided to the organizers, and will be distributed to the historical re-enactors and other history buffs that register to attend the events. Local schools will be on spring break at the time of the reunion, so many parents are expected to bring their children downtown to share in this example of living history. For specific information about the parade please call Maureen Lillemoe with the City of Fairfield at 428-7538. For information about the other reunion events call 424-5010 or visit the website- www.jimmydoolittlereunion.com TRANSITIONS It is with sadness that the Association bids adieu to two Downtown businesses. After more than fifty years of serving both civilian and uniformed customers in our area, and providing formal wear for countless weddings, Phil's Men's Shop closed its doors. Owners Grace and Hank Meschendorf and Sonny Zumpano will retire and take time for travel and family. Paul Manzo, The Family Attic, has also made the decision to retire, and has closed his store. Paul has served on the FDA Board of Directors for the last year, and the remaining Board members thank him for his dedication to the organization. Annual Board Retreat The Fairfield Downtown Association Board of Directors met on Thursday, January 30th at Fusilli Ristorante to set goals and projects for 2003. The Board finalized the calendar of events and discussed the results of the merchant survey. Klaus Jacobi, Rosanna's Bakery, and Wayne Mayhew, Pepper Belly's, were appointed to complete the terms of Brian Colla and Paul Manzo who recently resigned. The resignation of Isabella Rogers, Pharmatox, has been received, and a new Board member must be appointed to complete her term that expires on June 30th this year. If you are interested in completing this term and helping direct the progress of the association, please call a Board Member. Curt Johnston, City of Fairfield, reported on the significant reductions in economic redevelopment funds that could result from the shortfall in the state budget. Finances are better for the City of Fairfield than for many of the communities around us because of the increased reserve fund maintained by Fairfield. However, depending on the outcome of negotiations in Sacramento, funding for downtown programs could suffer. Among the programs facing possible removal from the state budget is California Main Street. Existing Main Street communities have formed an advocacy group to press the issue of funding with state legislators. To that end, representatives from Fairfield will attend a state-wide conference February 24, 25 and 26 in Sacramento. Of special interest is the legislative breakfast on Wednesday, February 25th- State Treasurer Phil Angelides will be the featured speaker, and will discuss the state budget. This is an excellent opportunity to show support for the Main Street program. Admission to the event is free, so if you are interested in attending and learning more about the program that supports our revitalization efforts, call the FDA office to register. Each member of the team is an extension of the sales and customer service experience. 2. Customers do not forget promises. Business is based on trust. When a business loses a customer's trust, there is really no basis for continuing the business relationship. 3. Customers do not forget how a business handles issues or misunderstandings. When customers have an issue or misunderstanding, more than any other time, a business has the opportunity to develop a bonded relationship. 4. Customers do not forget what happens after the sale. The best marketing tool available to a business is the customer's satisfaction after the sale. A business can set itself apart by being an after-the-sale champion. Customers will become loyal if the sales and customer service team develops a "no matter what it takes" attitude, keeps its promises, quickly addresses issues, and takes care of them after the sale. If a business does all these things, customers will be glad to come back for more! Remember: Everything counts!
