to main newsletter page FAIRFIELD DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER January 2004 BIG NEWS! Vision Care is now available to Fairfield Downtown Association members and their employees. This addition was the brainchild of office manager Sharon Trujillo, and she worked with our broker Carlos Badell to put the plan in place. Call Carlos at 800- 870-4510 for more information!
The Board repeated its position that downtown property owners and merchants need to help with the revitalization effort by taking action to improve their buildings by cleaning and painting the facades and updating landscaping where applicable. The Board asked the Planning Department to educate merchants and property owners on sign and use ordinances and zoning issues as they pertain to the downtown area. A series of workshops will be scheduled - keep an eye in the mail for announcements of the workshops/ seminars. Several Board members described what they feel is an identity problem- residents of Fairfield fail to realize that we have an historic downtown - or center - to the city. Many new residents think Solano Mall is "downtown," and the Fairfield Downtown Association needs to mount an effort to educate the public on who we are and what we do. Wash Blount (Fairfield Insurance Agency) suggested mailers or door-hangers to new residents, especially in the Gold Ridge subdivision on the eastern edge of town. Member suggestions for this area are appreciated. Board Members noted an increased police presence and
a reduced homeless presence downtown recently, and expressed relief at
these two areas of concern. The expansion of the festivals and the closure of
Webster Street for the major events were seen as successes for the district.
Board members expressed enthusiasm over the progress of the new County
administration center and expressed a desire to be "in the loop" on the
planning of the plaza and the parking lot in its use for downtown shoppers. The Board asked more merchants to offer inter-district discounts to members and employees. Wash Blount offers free notary service to all FDA members and employees, joining Dr. Mark Christensen and Fairfield Cleaners on the discount list The upgrade of the downtown electrical system was discussed. FDA has applied for Community Development Block Grant fund monies to upgrade the system. The funds would be used to increase the capacity of the system to allow the streetlights to be used for power for special events as well as providing power sufficient to light the pergolas lining Texas Street. Grant funds will be available after July 1st, and the bid process will begin immediately thereafter. More information will be available when the grants are awarded in the spring. FDA Treasurer Nino Giacalone and Office Manager Sharon Trujillo presented a year-to-date report. The organization is on target in the collection of PBIA funds, and is within budget on expenditures. Copies of the full report are available at the FDA office. Since there is a significant chance that the state budget shortfall will have an impact on redevelopment funds and, therefore, the available funding from the City of Fairfield, FDA staff prepared a list of recommendations of ways to cut event costs. The Board voted to delete the Concerts in the Courtyard from the calendar of events and use small musical groups at no more than $150 per week through the Certified Farmers Market season. Entry fees for the parade and crafter fees for the festivals will be increased slightly to add income to reduce reliance on Redevelopment Agency funds. FDA staff and the Organization Committee will increase its efforts to secure corporate sponsorships for the festivals to help make the events self-sufficient. The full minutes from the meeting and the Treasurer's Report are available at the FDA office- 422-0103- call Sharon and she will see that you receive a copy. The FDA Board meets the third Thursday of each month-

Financial institutions, insurance and investment agencies were exempt from the 1971 assessment district. Associate Memberships now allow those businesses to join the association and take an active role in the operations of the organization. Businesses pay $125 per year, while individuals and families pay $35 per year. This is a way for us to increase active participation from the community and add to the FDA operating funds. If you would like a voice in the decisions made by the organization, contact a Board member or the FDA office about becoming an associate member. 707-422-0103 CHAIR: George Fernando Redi Office Emporium -426-2659 capocsgm@aol.com Term expires June 2006 VICE CHAIR : Tony Brantley Brantley's Taekwondo-429-3744 mrsbrantley@excite.com Term expires June 2005 TREASURER: Nino Giacalone Fusilli Ristorante - 428-4211/ 252-8779 ninonapa@aol.com Term expires June 2006 CORRESPONDING SECRETARY : Cathi Jasso Pacific California Realty - 428-1105 paccalcat@jccomp.com Term expires June 2005 DIRECTORS: Gary Dyas J&J Mortgage 1107 Longspur Ln- Suisun City of Fairfield gdyas@comhomeloans.com Term expires June 2006 Judy Davis (Associate Member) SGolden Horizon Mortgage - 425-5314 wjd8604@aol.com Term expires June 2004 Gary Dyas (Associate Member) J&J Mortgage- 429-9720 gdyas@comhomeloans.com Term expires June 2005 Klaus Jacobi Rosanna's Bakery- 422-2253 klaus2xl@myexcel.com Term expires June 2004 Richard Lockwood Touch of Faith - 425-3393 richardlockwood@sbcglobal.net Term expires June 2006 Wayne Mayhew Pepper Belly's- 426-4622 mayhew@pepperbellys.com Term expires June 2004 George Romero (Associate Member) HiTec Cellular- 421-2189 hitec@computronix.net Term expires June 2004 Bob Reich (Ex Officio Member) Fairfield Center for Creative Arts - 428-7760 rreich@ci.fairfield.ca.us Staff: Emily Low (Main Street Program Coordinator) emily@fairfielddowntown.com Sharon Trujillo (Office Manager & Clerk to Board) Sue Violette (Event Planner)- 422-0103 mail@fairfielddowntown.com City Liaison: Rich Atkins - 428-7572 ratkins@ci.fairfield.ca.us Natalie Dumont, an associate member representing Greenbelt Alliance (733 Texas Street) resigned from the Board because of job change. will be approximately 65 exhibitors including government agencies that
purchase materials and services locally. Learn how you can obtain government
contracts while you network with your fellow business professionals.
FDA will have a table to display restaurant guides,
the calendar of events and print materials from downtown businesses. Each
business is invited to bring flyers and samples to distribute. Drop your
materials at the FDA office by March 5th so we can get organized before
the big event! Monday, May 10th will bring the Fairfield- Suisun Chamber
of Commerce to downtown for a mixer. Last September the association hosted
the Chamber for a mixer including a fashion show featuring clothing and
accessories from downtown shops. The fashion show was particularly well
received. Chamber members commented that it was a unique and fun way to
introduce the businesses to the Chamber membership- and profitable for
the shops involved as well! Cathi Jasso (Pac Cal Realty) will chair the
committee to plan the fashion show. Gary Dyas (J&J Mortgage) will recruit
restaurants to provide appetizers and showcase their establishments. Fusilli Ristorante (620 Jackson St)- has introduced a new lunch menu AND a new children's menu! Fairfield Insurance Agency (729 Jefferson Street), while new to the downtown is certainly not new to Fairfield. The business has offered insurance services to the community for over 35 years. Owner and principal agent Wash Blount says that when his lease came due for renewal he looked around and decided that downtown was the place to be. He looks forward to the increased business traffic resulting from the new County administration center, and has wasted no time becoming involved in the FDA organization. Wash was recently appointed to the Board of Directors. You can reach him at 425-9588 to share your concerns and suggestions for the district. Not Just Dance (917 Empire Street) is now open. Owner Anita Darbonne is very experienced in being a business owner downtown- she owns and operates Center Stage Ballet Academy (710 Madison St). The new location is just a few steps from the dance academy and retails dance and work out clothing and accessories. Amore's Pizza is coming to town! Marla Pugh, Daily Republic If you've walked down Texas Street lately, you've undoubtedly noticed changes to the former Alan Witt Barbershop space. Steven and Kerry Vafeas and their son John have leased the property and will open Amore's Pizzeria in the spring. The family moved to Fairfield in August and comes from a long line of restaurant owners. Steven spent years training in pizzerias and Italian restaurants and wanted open a place of his own, using an old family recipe handed down by his father. The shop isn't large enough for inside seating, but people can come in and pick up whole pizzas to go or slices of pizza for a quick lunch. They'll also deliver. They'll be open late to cater to the Pepper Belly's crowd and encourage more people to visit downtown after regular business hours. Do You Know A Working Hero? The Daily Republic's business section wants to pay tribute to the working heroes that help make Solano County's businesses a success. If you work with someone who went out of their way to make a client happy, who worked 'round the clock to meet an important deadline, or who inspires others to do their best, let us know so we can let others know. Or if you've received exceptional service as a customer and want to give someone a pat on the back, we want to know that too. Fax your nomination to "Working Hero" to 425-5924 or mail it to "Working Hero," 1250 Texas St., Fairfield, 94533. You can also e-mail your nomination to mpugh@dailyrepublic.net Coming Attractions May 6th- First Farmers Market of the Season May 10th- Chamber Mixer Downtown July 4th- Independence Day Parade, BBQ & Concert August 14th- 13th Annual Tomato Festival October 7th- Last Farmers Market of the Season October 9th- 4th Annual Candy Festival October 31st- Halloween Trick or Treat November 11th- Veterans' Day Observances December 3rd- Holiday Night of Lights There will be no Solano Bicycle Classic this year, so there are no FDA events planned until the Farmers Market opens. Remember- FDA merchants are entitled to free booth space at each festival AND at the market. Welcome Wagon The FDA Board has entered into an agreement with Karen Best of Welcome Wagon (WW) to advertise downtown businesses in the WW publication. The booklet is a telephone directory/ address book format with advertising. Advertisers are listed in the directory and the new homeowner can add the doctor, dentist, plumber, etc in blank sections. WW provides the association with a list of the homes the booklet has been sent to, reports on use of coupons published in the directory and follow up letters to the homeowners. FDA will fund a single page ad with participating merchants sharing the cost. Sue Violette (FDA Special Event Planner) has negotiated a very favorable non-profit rate for the association. Karen has a letter of introduction from the Board and a listing of FDA members. Please welcome her into your business and give her an opportunity to explain the benefits of advertising in the WW booklet. You are, of course, under no obligation to participate, but the reduced group rate should make it attractive. Karen can be reached at 800-737-4859 ext 1991. Public Safety Contacts
